Accessibility

NDKids is built for neurodivergent children and their families. We take accessibility seriously — not as an afterthought, but as a core design principle from the very first line of code.

The accessibility bar

Every page on NDKids includes a built-in accessibility bar that gives users control over how content is displayed. Features include:

  • Low-sensory mode — reduces animations, mutes colours, and creates a calmer visual experience for users who are easily overwhelmed by busy screens.
  • Dyslexia-friendly font — switches to a typeface designed for easier reading, with wider letter spacing and distinct letter shapes.
  • Text size control — four sizes (small, medium, large, extra-large) so users can find the size that works for them.
  • High contrast mode — increases contrast ratios beyond AA minimums for users who need stronger visual differentiation.

Preferences are saved locally and persist between visits. No account is needed.

WCAG 2.2 AA compliance

We aim to meet or exceed the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. This includes:

  • Sufficient colour contrast ratios (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text).
  • Full keyboard navigation across all interactive elements.
  • Proper semantic HTML, ARIA labels, and landmark roles for screen reader users.
  • Visible focus indicators that meet the 2px minimum outlined in WCAG 2.2.
  • Responsive design that works from 320px to any viewport width.
  • No content that relies solely on colour to convey meaning.
  • Reduced motion support via prefers-reduced-motion for users who have enabled this at the OS level.

ND-specific provisions

Beyond standard accessibility guidelines, we make specific design decisions for neurodivergent users:

  • Content depth levels. Every concept page offers three depths — quick idea, tell me more, and go deeper — so users can engage at a level that suits their current capacity.
  • Age-appropriate language. Content adapts between child (under 12) and teen (12-17) language registers.
  • Predictable navigation. Consistent layout, clear headings, and visible breadcrumbs reduce cognitive load.
  • Calm colour palette. Designed to be engaging without being overstimulating.
  • Plain language. Short sentences, clear structure, and no jargon without explanation.
  • No autoplaying media. Videos and animations never start without user action.
