What cookies and local storage are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. Local storage is a similar technology that allows a website to save information in your browser. Both are used to remember preferences and understand how the site is used.
Our approach
NDKids uses minimal cookies and local storage. We do not use advertising cookies, social media trackers, or third-party marketing tools. We do not share cookie data with advertisers.
What we use
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
ndkids-a11y | Local storage | Saves your accessibility preferences (text size, low-sensory mode, dyslexia font, high contrast) | Until cleared |
ndkids-age-band | Local storage | Remembers your selected content age band (child, teen, or parent) | Until cleared |
ph_* | Cookie | PostHog analytics — helps us understand which pages are visited and how the site is used (aggregated, not personally identifying) | 1 year |
Essential local storage
Accessibility preferences and age band selection are stored locally on your device using your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device and is never sent to our servers. No consent is required for essential local storage under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), as these are strictly necessary for the site to function as you have configured it.
Analytics cookies
We use PostHog, hosted in the European Union, to collect anonymised analytics data. This helps us understand:
- Which pages are most visited
- How long people spend reading content
- Which features and tools are used
- General geographic region of visitors (country level only)
Analytics data is aggregated and not used to identify individual visitors. We do not combine analytics data with any other data source to identify you.
What we do not use
- No advertising or remarketing cookies
- No social media tracking pixels
- No third-party behavioural analytics
- No fingerprinting or cross-site tracking
- No profiling of children or young people
How to manage cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:
- View what cookies are stored
- Delete individual or all cookies
- Block cookies from specific or all sites
- Set preferences for first-party vs third-party cookies
Blocking essential local storage may prevent your accessibility preferences from being saved between visits.
To opt out of PostHog analytics specifically, you can use a privacy-focused browser extension such as uBlock Origin, or enable your browser's "Do Not Track" setting.
