What are common challenges with brains that feel feelings fast?

Having big reactions Feelings changing quickly Being surprised by emotions

What can I try to help with brains that feel feelings fast?

When a big feeling hits, try the "5-second pause": silently count 1-2-3-4-5 before saying or doing anything. This gives your prefrontal cortex time to catch up with your amygdala. Name the feeling as specifically as you can — not just "angry" but "frustrated because this feels unfair" or "disappointed because I expected something different." Specific naming reduces emotional intensity. Build a personal "first aid kit" for big emotions: write down 3 things that help you when feelings are overwhelming (examples: cold water on wrists, listening to a specific song, squeezing a stress ball, going to a specific safe place). Keep the list in your phone so it is always with you. Track your emotional patterns for a week: note what triggered big feelings, what time they happened, and what helped. You will start to see patterns that help you prepare.
